Red Squirrels

Red squirrels are our native species, but are in decline due to the introduction, from North America in the 1800's, of the slightly larger grey squirrel, which carry squirrelpox, a virus that doesn’t harm them, but is deadly to reds. 75% of the reds in the UK are found in Scotland. There are various ongoing schemes to try to protect them.
